Hampton's Buckroe Beach has unveiled a new inclusive playground, thoughtfully designed with shaded areas and sensory-friendly equipment to welcome children of all abilities.
The previous playground, over two decades old, was removed after the 2024 season due to its outdated condition. In response, the city engaged with residents, particularly from the Buckroe neighborhood, through public meetings and an online survey that garnered 500 responses. This collaborative effort emphasized the need for enhanced accessibility and sensory features.
The new playground incorporates elements that reflect the beach environment, such as a sand mound resembling a lifeguard stand and lighting fixtures matching those at the nearby James T. Wilson Fishing Pier. These features not only provide a unique aesthetic but also create a cohesive connection to the surrounding area.
Mayor Jimmy Gray highlighted the community's role in the project, stating, "We talked to our residents and we listened to what they had to say. The playground we’re opening here today is all new and very exciting, and I know that families will enjoy it for many, many years."
The playground is open daily from sunrise to sunset, offering a welcoming space for families to gather and children to play. Residents who had personalized pickets in the previous fence can retrieve them at the Comfort Station on Sunday mornings from 9-11 a.m. or Wednesday evenings from 4-6 p.m. Appointments can also be made by calling 757-778-2538.
This initiative underscores Hampton's commitment to creating inclusive and engaging public spaces that cater to the diverse needs of its community. |
