Hampton Pirates' Home Winning Streak Ends with 75-67 Loss to UNCW

Seahawks' Late Surge and Free Throw Advantage Prove Decisive

The Hampton Pirates faced a challenging matchup against the UNCW Seahawks on January 24, 2026, resulting in a 75-67 defeat that snapped their impressive 11-game home winning streak at the Hampton Convocation Center.

For the first 29 minutes, the game remained tightly contested, with both teams showcasing their offensive prowess. However, a pivotal 17-6 run by UNCW in the latter part of the second half shifted the momentum decisively in favor of the Seahawks.

A significant factor in the outcome was the disparity in free throw attempts. UNCW capitalized on their opportunities at the line, attempting 27 free throws compared to Hampton's 8, which contributed substantially to their victory.

Despite the loss, the Pirates had notable performances. Daniel Johnson led the team with 17 points, while Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt added 14 points, and Josh Ogundele contributed 11 points.

Statistically, UNCW outscored Hampton 32-24 in the paint, highlighting their dominance inside. Both teams exhibited efficient shooting in the first half, with Hampton hitting 65% from the field and UNCW close behind at 58%.

This game marked the second meeting between the two teams this month, with UNCW also securing a narrow 49-45 victory in their previous encounter on January 3, 2026.

With this loss, Hampton's record stands at 10-11 overall and 4-4 in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA), while UNCW improves to 18-3 overall and 7-1 in the conference.

Looking ahead, the Pirates aim to regroup and address areas of improvement, particularly in defending the paint and capitalizing on free throw opportunities. Their next challenge is an away game against Drexel on January 29, 2026, where they will strive to bounce back and regain their competitive edge in the league.

In the broader context of the Hampton community, the city continues to engage residents in development-related decisions. The Community Engagement Division focuses on providing information about new developments, land use amendments, and rezoning applications, ensuring that residents are informed and involved in shaping their neighborhoods.

As the Pirates work to overcome this setback, the support from the Hampton community remains a vital component of their journey through the season.
