Severe weather prompts widespread schedule changes across the region |
A significant winter storm over the weekend has led to numerous closures and delays throughout the Hampton Roads area.
Hampton City Public Schools have transitioned to a remote workday for staff on Monday, with students receiving a day off. All sports practices, games, and other activities scheduled for Monday are canceled.
The Fort Monroe Visitor Center and Casemate Museum are closed, with normal operations set to resume on Wednesday.
City offices, libraries, community centers, and other public facilities in Hampton will open at 10 a.m. Employees have the option to take liberal leave starting at 10 a.m. If sufficient paid time off is unavailable, the time off will be unpaid, or employees can seek approval to make up the hours during the workweek.
Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) is operating on a modified snow route schedule with limited service on Monday. Hourly bus service is provided on designated routes from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Tide light rail and Elizabeth River Ferry operate every 30 minutes during the same hours. Paratransit service, OnDemand Ridesharing, and Base Express are not in operation. Customers should anticipate delays.
In Chesapeake, city offices and facilities are opening at 10 a.m. Employees with questions about their specific reporting time should contact their supervisor. The Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will also open at 10 a.m. Chesapeake Public Schools are operating on a two-hour delay.
Franklin City Public Schools are closed on Monday.
In Isle of Wight County, schools are closed for all staff and students.
James City County has canceled Teens on Target and Exceptional Expeditions scheduled for Monday. The 250th Pottery Program is postponed to February 6 and 7.
New Kent County Public Schools are closed, with an asynchronous learning day in place. All after-school activities, athletic events, and extracurricular programs are canceled.
In Newport News, city offices open at 10 a.m. for nonessential employees. Essential employees should report as scheduled. Liberal leave has been authorized. Telework employees should work their normal schedule. Christopher Newport University is operating fully remote on Monday. Regattas will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., while all other dining locations are closed. The Trible Library is open on a 24/7 swipe basis. The Trieshmann Fitness Pavilion is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Ferguson and Torggler centers are closed.
Four Oaks Day Service remains open as a shelter for women, families with children, and transgender individuals experiencing homelessness, returning to normal operating hours. The PORT Winter Shelter at All Generations Church, operated by LINK of Hampton Roads, has resumed normal operations.
The Denbigh Community Center, Brittingham-Midtown Community Center, and Downing-Gross Cultural Center will operate as warming centers Monday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Libraries are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Parks and recreation facilities are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, with childcare continuing its regular hours, opening at 6 a.m. The Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter Adoption and Reunite Centers operate from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday. The Recovery Operations Center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with mulch and compost sales resuming on Tuesday. Trash and recycling collections will resume when it can be safely picked up.
Newport News Public Schools have Monday and Tuesday as scheduled days off for students.
In Norfolk, public schools and administrative offices have a two-hour delay on Monday. Only essential personnel should report in person. Old Dominion University will delay opening all campus locations until 10 a.m., including the medical campus and higher education center locations in Virginia Beach and Portsmouth. The Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences EVMS Medical Group at ODU will follow normal operations, including clinical operations. Tidewater Community College will provide all instruction remotely.
Portsmouth Public Schools are operating on a two-hour delay.
Poquoson City Public Schools have a virtual school day.
In Suffolk, city facilities will open at 10 a.m. Suffolk Public Schools will operate on a two-hour delay.
In Virginia Beach, students have Monday and Tuesday off in Virginia Beach City Public Schools, with both days remaining staff workdays.
In Williamsburg, city offices are closed, including all offices in the Municipal Building on Lafayette Street and Quarterpath Recreation Center. Waller Mill Park is also closed. Garbage collection is delayed by one day this week, with Republic Services picking up Monday’s collection route on Tuesday, and Tuesday’s collection route on Wednesday. Colonial Williamsburg is closed, with essential personnel reporting as scheduled. Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools are closed on Monday, which was a planned student holiday. Students will not engage in remote learning.
In York County, only essential personnel will report in person to work on Monday at York County School Division. All after-school activities, field trips, and events are canceled.
In Yorktown, the Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown are closed.
