student makerspace and workforce development opportunities for students

Hampton University is revitalizing its commitment to practical education through the launch of the Tyrod Taylor Strive Academy, a program designed to equip students with entrepreneurial skills and real-world experience.

The academy offers hands-on instruction, access to makerspaces, and mentorship opportunities, enabling students to transform innovative ideas into viable business ventures. Located in downtown Hampton's Harbour Centre, the program is part of the university's Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship

NFL quarterback and Hampton native Tyrod Taylor serves as the academy's inaugural entrepreneur-in-residence, aiming to inspire students to pursue bold ambitions and make lasting impacts.

The initiative includes certificate programs in high-growth industries such as culinary arts, technology, beauty, fashion, and entertainment, allowing students to complement their primary degrees with specialized skills. Additionally, Taylor has spearheaded the launch of Pirate Valet, a student-run transportation service operating on and around campus.

A dynamic speaker series features successful Hampton University alumni and industry leaders, providing students with valuable insights and networking opportunities. Recent events have included panels celebrating Women's History Month and discussions on fashion entrepreneurship.

The university has also introduced an accelerated Master of Science in entrepreneurship and innovation, enabling students to earn both bachelor's and graduate degrees in four years. Strive Academy events are integrated into this program's curriculum, offering a comprehensive educational experience.

Makerspaces available to students and community members are equipped with 3D printers, AI technology, podcast and music production studios, and fashion design tools, fostering a collaborative environment for creativity and innovation.

Through these initiatives, Hampton University is empowering students to become the next generation of entrepreneurs, ready to make significant contributions to their communities and industries.
