Living shorelines solutions for Hampton Virginia

Exploring oyster shell recycling and shoreline erosion prevention efforts

Hampton University's Marine and Environmental Science Department is embarking on an innovative project to transform the shoreline along the Hampton River near the university's marina into a living shoreline.

Dr. Deidre Gibson, chair of the department, is leading this initiative, which will serve as a hands-on educational opportunity for students to design and implement sustainable shoreline solutions.

Living shorelines utilize natural materials like marsh grasses and oyster shells to stabilize shorelines, prevent erosion, and enhance water quality.

These methods offer a resilient alternative to traditional hard structures such as bulkheads.

In collaboration with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the project will involve the deployment of innovative materials, including Natrx Basalt Oyster Shell Bags, to create a robust foundation for oyster reefs.

These reefs not only protect against erosion but also provide essential habitats for marine life.

Additionally, the initiative will incorporate oyster shell recycling, repurposing shells collected from local restaurants and community events to support the growth of new oyster populations.

This effort aligns with the broader goal of restoring the Hampton River's ecosystem and improving its resilience to climate change.

By integrating practical experience with environmental stewardship, Hampton University aims to equip students with the skills necessary to address coastal challenges effectively.

As Dr. Gibson emphasizes, this project provides a unique opportunity for students to engage in meaningful research and contribute directly to the health of their local waterways.

Through these collaborative efforts, Hampton is taking significant steps toward sustainable shoreline management and the preservation of its coastal environment.
