Artemis Moon Tree Inspires Students at Hampton, Virginia

Exploring the impact of the moon tree and mary w jackson elementary

On March 18, 2026, the community of Hampton, Virginia, gathered at Mary W. Jackson Fundamental Elementary School to dedicate a remarkable addition to their campus—an Artemis Moon Tree.

This loblolly pine, grown from a seed that orbited the Moon during NASA's Artemis I mission in late 2022, symbolizes exploration and the boundless possibilities of scientific discovery.

After its journey, the seed was nurtured into a sapling by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service before finding its permanent home in Hampton.

The dedication ceremony featured heartfelt performances by the school's chorus and insightful reflections from students on the significance of the Moon Tree.

One student shared that participating in planting the tree made them realize how small actions, like adding soil, contribute to a strong foundation, both for the tree and in life.

Another student reflected on the experience, noting that helping plant the tree made them feel part of something larger and emphasized the importance of care and support in growth.

These sentiments underscore the tree's role as a living symbol of growth, resilience, and the pursuit of knowledge.

Principal Ernriekus Williams expressed pride in the school's selection as a steward for the Moon Tree, highlighting its potential to inspire students in STEM fields.

He emphasized that the tree serves as a tangible connection to space exploration, sparking curiosity and engagement among students.

The event also honored the legacy of Mary W. Jackson, the school's namesake and NASA's first African American female engineer.

Jackson's pioneering work continues to inspire students to reach for the stars.

The Artemis Moon Tree stands as a beacon of hope and a testament to the enduring spirit of exploration and learning.

As it grows, it will serve as a reminder of the community's commitment to nurturing the next generation of innovators and explorers.
